Camaiore, CARPETS OF SAWDUST   - Tappeti di Segatura

Camaiore, CARPETS OF SAWDUST

The night of the feast of Corpus Domini, the streets in the town centre of Camaiore brighten up with lights and become enlivened with people. Every year the traditional preparation of carpets of sawdust is repeated. Longer than 50 metres, painstakingly crafted to the smallest detail, they represent a tradition that continues since the end of 19th century, when flowers were used at first rather than sawdust or “pula” as it is known in the local dialect.

In contrast to the long work spent in the design and preparation of the material, starting months before, these works of art have a short life. The following morning they will adorn the passage of the Corpus Domini procession.
